‘Stuck in the Middle with You’ Review
By Annie Kenney
Every now and again Supernatural does an episode that makes you go ‘That’s clever’! This was one of those episodes and I loved it. It kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish and it also kept me guessing. Who was Mr. Ketch talking to? What had Mary taken? Why the hell did that demon have yellow eyes? All of these questions answered in one fractured narrative that showed that there is still life in the old dog yet.
As well as being clever this episode also had all the ingredients that make Supernatural wonderful. The Winchester brothers, their kick ass mom, Castiel and a random hunter who would turn out to be a ‘red shirt’ (Please forgive the Star Trek reference) and a bit of a red herring too. There was a good dose of humor (Dean trying to teach Castiel how to flirt with their waitress, Mary telling Sam off for being on his tablet all the time, typical family type disagreements at the dinner table) and also pathos (Castiel telling the Winchesters they were the best thing that ever happened to him and then adding ‘I love you’. Made me say ahhhh right aloud as I was watching it.
I must say that I loved the introduction of Ramiel – King of Hell and the fact that there was an actual back story to the yellow eyed demon(s). It was also nice to see the Michael sword for the first time after touching on it in Season 2 and Season 5. The most interesting thing about the whole episode is that Ramiel just wanted to be left alone. He wasn’t interested in taking up his position as ‘King of Hell’ and passed the mantle to Crowley. On that point it was good to see Crowley again and it was also interesting to see his history with Ramiel.
Demons have become fairly old hat and non-threatening so it was good to see one that was so evil and powerful. His fight with the Winchesters was exciting and tense and it was horrible to see Cas stabbed and to see him suffering (my husband didn’t like the fact all that black gunk was coming from his mouth particularly was as we had decided to eat at that very moment), but I have to confess I knew he would be ok! I don’t think we are going to lose Cas for a long time yet and, for once, I am quite pleased about it.
I must confess that I’d forgotten when we’d last seen the colt and who had had it! I know it was used in the Season 6 episode ‘Frontier land,’ but we haven’t seen or heard much about it since. It was an excellent twist to find it in the possession of Ramiel and now in the possession of Mary (or is it Mr. Ketch).
It was pleasing to see Sam use Michael’s sword to kill Ramiel. It had to be Sam really given his history with yellow-eyed demons! Nice to see Crowley save Cas too. Everyone who is anyone was involved in this episode and that, combined with the art house style of direction, made it interesting and one you want to see again.
And the final twist? Lucifer is back!! The real evil Mark Pellegrino Lucifer and in a cage (not the cage) in Crowley’s lair. That doesn’t bode well in my opinion, but I love Mark’s Lucifer and I kind of hope he sticks around.
So, another 10/10 episode! The writers are spoiling us and I can only hope this good run continues. Can’t wait for next week to see what lies in store.
